Lothian and Deale

Nestled in the county of Anne Arundel, the towns of Lothian, Deale and Churchton are an integral part of the rich history in this area. Deale’s first residents arrived in the mid-17th century, with watermen traveling over from the eastern shore of the Chesapeake to a natural oyster bar called Bay Shore Bar in the mid-19th century. Anne Arundel, the namesake of Anne Arundel County, lived a short but historically eventful life. Lady Anne was the daughter of a powerful Catholic nobleman (Lord Arundel of Wardour) and married Cecil Calvert, who inherited from his father the title of “Absolute Lord of Maryland and Avalon.” Having given birth to nine children, Lady Anne died in 1639 at the tender age of 34. Investing plenty of time and money into making the new colony prosperous, Cecil created Anne Arundel County, naming it in honor of his late wife.

Education is extremely important in the area. Lothian students have access to Lothian Elementary School, which has been providing high quality education since 1956. A member of the school’s faculty was awarded the prestigious Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award, demonstrating the school’s commitment to excellence. Lothian is also home to Southern Middle School, whose philosophy is commitment to helping students “achieve mastery of basic skills and acquire basic knowledge necessary to develop positive self-image and to foster academic, social and personal growth.” Lothian residents also have available to them private institutions, such as the Chesapeake Christian School, a non-denominational Christian educational institution.

Residents of Deale have access to Deale Elementary School, whose “children reflect their rural, country-style heritage, where traditional family and school values still remain a part of daily lives.” The average teacher at Deale Elementary has a master’s degree and more than 20 years of teaching experience.

In the general area, residents of Lothian, Deale and Churchton have access to the Anne Arundel County Public School System. The school system gives locals access to 77 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 12 high schools and a number of special schools. Among the district’s list of high achieving schools are five National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence and three Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.

In terms of higher education, the area is home to Anne Arundel Community College - which has been voted “Community College of the Year” - and the University of Maryland, which offers numerous bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s degrees and a few doctor of management programs. The University of Maryland has been awarded the Sloan Consortium Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Asynchronous Learning Network Programming. The university has won many other awards for on-line programming, most recently from the Maryland Distance Learning Association for having the best distance education course. The university has also been designated a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency and has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as Best of the Web in distance education.

The economy in Anne Arundel is impressive, with a commitment to success just as strong as it was back in the mid-17th century. The unemployment rate is consistently below the national average. When combined with the superior quality of life found on the Chesapeake Bay, the county’s economy makes for an inviting area for both residents and businesses alike.

Because the county is clearly an important business hub, it is not surprising that transportation is also important. Anne Arundel County boasts a superior interstate highway system, as well as the Port of Baltimore, the MARC commuter rail and a great system of bus services and light rail. In addition to this, Anne Arundel County is home to the Baltimore-Washington International Airport, which is the fastest growing major airport in the nation.

living in Anne Arundel County, residents of Lothian, Deale and Churchton are never at a loss for something to do. The area boats its own orchestra, ballet theatre and opera, with leading jazz artists a regular sight in downtown Annapolis. In addition, residents can enjoy interesting collections at the National Cryptologic Museum, such as the code cracking and espionage works of the National Security Agency.

It has been said that living in the Lothian, Deale and Churchton area is like being “on a never-ending vacation.” It is not surprising to see why, considering the abundance of parks, schools, sports, wildlife, water sports and local, county, state and national events that are just a part of the wonder of living here.
